Kennebunk High School Students support Habitat

Freshman Real World Awareness Project @ Kennebunk High School

4 KBHS students Amy Roy's Freshman English students at Kennebunk High School are responsible for completing a where they can get involved and make a difference in their world. The students choose their own cause to focus on and the scope can be KBHS, the community, state, country, or world. The project spans the course of the semester and culminates in a student made documentary illustrating what they have learned throughout the project.  The objectives of this project were to introduce students to the broader world creating internationally-minded people, connect and introduce students to the International Baccalaureate philosophy, work collaboratively with a group of their peers, and equip students with technology skills of the 21st century. Alex Jarvis, Will Spofford, Lucas Butterfield, Erin McLuskey and Alyssa Heber (not pictured) chose Habitat for Humanity York County at their project. Lucas read a story in the newspaper about a group of UME students raising funds for Habitat and thought KHS should do the same for the local Habitat for Humanity. The group organized a bake sale of cookies and brownies and raised $70.  Will Spofford said he and the group members gained personal satisfaction from helping someone else.

Kennebunk High School Art Student creates Habitat Poster

Kiah Raymond, a junior at KHS created a poster that was selected for Habitat for Humanity York County to use in displays and presentations. Kiah's interest in art was fostered by her attendance at The School Around Us for her first six years and her step-father, who is an artist. In addition to her art classes KHS, she has taken classes at River Tree Arts Center and recently returned from a three-day institute at the Haystack Mountain School of Arts in Deer Isle, Maine.

Kiah likes using pens for her art and created the HfH poster using a Sharpee before scanning it in to finish.  Music inspires her art, as does nature.  For the poster, she reflected the ocean and woods of York County.

Art is not a hobby for Kiah - she intends to pursue her interest in the fine arts (all mediums) in college.  Kiah credits Art Department teachers Deborah Robinson, Katie Reagan, Geoff Drew and Marnie Rollerson for helping foster and develop her art.
