Habitat for Humanity
Sanford Projects
Habitat for Humanity York County currently owns 3 parcels of land in Sanford, that will support at least 5 equal opportunity affordable homeownership opportunities.
We are excited to spend the next 2-3 years building in Sanford, but we need your help!

Meet Diego and Eileen
Habitat for Humanity York County is excited to partner with Diego and Eileen, a couple who spent decades serving their community and country.
For decades, Eileen served her community as a nurse and caregiver. She spent the majority of her career as a nurse and in home hospice care in Vermont. After college, Diego enlisted in the Navy in 1969. The Navy gave Diego the opportunity to serve our country and travel the world as a member of a flight control squadron for naval amphibious operations. Both Diego and Eileen have dedicated their lives providing aid to others.
Fate (and modern technology) brought Diego and Eileen, both proud parents (and grandparents!), together. Since 2005, they have called Maine home.
Both are thrilled to partner with Habitat, as Diego summarized the impact of home ownership: “a Habitat for Humanity home means reaching peace and happiness.”

Project #3

Meet Morgan and Deb
Morgan and Deb both grew up in Maine, within the same twenty miles our whole lives. All of their family lives in Maine and Morgan has been at the same job since he was a teenager. Morgan, Deb, their 11 and 12 year old daughters and 7 year old mini Blue Heeler are currently living in Wells.
“We thought home ownership was completely beyond us, that we had missed the boat when everyone bought at reasonable prices. We were both working good full time jobs, and qualified for a traditional mortgage, but the monthly payment was over half our income and just not feasible. The girls had moved four times before Jr High, between various short term rentals. We were talking about moving across the country, where we didn’t have any connections, just to afford a home”.
Deb was amazed when a friend of hers posted that Habitat for Humanity was looking for families for housing in Sanford! They go to church there and knew that location would be a good fit for them. They knew of Habitat, but didn’t realize it was for middle income, like they were. She decided to put in an application, but didn’t think it would actually happen. Then they were down to the final ten and had their home visit and it started seeming a lot more real.
Finally, they got the call that they were selected! It seemed too good to be true. They were so excited to have their own space to decorate and a place to put down roots. They can’t wait to meet their neighbors and get involved in the community.
“ We are so grateful to Habitat for Humanity for partnering with us and giving us the opportunity to be home owners. We are also so thankful for our friends, family and co-workers showing up to volunteer and help with our sweat equity hours, that make up part of the down payment.”
After moving, they will be busy getting the kids adjusted to a new school and involved in the Chorus/Band programs. Deb will continue to volunteer usher for every local theater that will take her, as well as continuing to volunteer at the Restore, because it has been so enjoyable.
The kids are excited for their new home, especially painting their own rooms and putting up posters. Deb and Morgan are excited to be in a place that is theirs and not have to worry about being moved in a year or two. Morgan is also thrilled to have a one story house, as he has some mobility issues and Deb is looking forward to picking out cabinets and counter tops.
